The Bakes and Cakes Show

I was struck down with a horrible cold last week but despite that I dragged myself up from my sick-bed and sea of tissues to go and see Mary Berry in action at the BBC Good Food Bakes and Cakes show last week. I’m a big fan of the Great British Bake Off (GBBO) so I was super excited to see her live! There were loads of baking exhibitors and demonstrations to keep us occupied while we waiting to see Mary (I had tickets for the last demonstration of the day). The interview stage was hosted by GBBO series two winner Jo Wheatley, and featured a number of other winners and participants from previous seasons including John Whaite, Holly Bell and Cat Dresser. It was interesting to hear what they have been up to since their time on the show.

There were also some amazing cakes on display from professional bakers. The precision on some of the sugar craft cakes was amazing! I don’t know how they have either the patience or steady hand for that type of work! Someone even made Mary in sugar form 🙂

One of the highlights of the day was seeing the Meringue Girls demonstration in the afternoon. They create such eye-catching and colourful treats! Plus I have always enjoyed meringues as a treat (it’s no surprise so that I bought a box of their meringue kisses from their stall – the coconut and gin and tonic flavours were my favourites!) During the demo they spoke a little about their backgrounds and how they started their business (check out their site here) and made some mince-pie and raspberry flavored meringue kisses. They also bought a tray of meringue kisses with them so everyone could try one which was a lovely gesture!

Although we had to wait until the very last theatre demo of the day to see the wonderful Mary Berry, she was certainly worth the wait! She demoed 2 recipes, one for chocolate roulade and another for raspberry and apple muffins. She was joined on stage by her daughter Annabelle so it was a family show! It was so wonderful to see her live, she is absolutely my baking idol! I’m looking forward to trying out the roulade soon and giving it a  Christmasy twist.
